A microscope at child height, with a stage to lay things on and a ring to look through. A leaf goes on, then a feather, then a scrap of fabric, and the child leans in and stops moving for a minute, which is the whole point of it.

From three for the ritual of placing something on the stage, and useful well into primary years as the specimens get more deliberate.

Why it lasts.

We carry Q Toys at My Toy Wagon because they finish wood to be felt rather than sealed smooth, and because they make under a Fair Trade scheme in Vietnam with a zero-waste principle behind the material choices.

Who it's for

For the parent
It gets a child to look at one small thing for a long time, which is the skill, not the magnification.
For the educator
A nature table anchor. Children bring specimens to it rather than being handed them, which changes who is doing the work.
For the gift-giver
It looks like a real instrument on a shelf, and it survives being carried outside and back.

Ways to play.

Put a leaf on the stage and look. Swap it for a feather, a shell, a scrap of wool, a piece of bark. Keep a drawing book beside it and record what was looked at. Take it into the garden and bring the garden back to it.

Materials & construction

Hand-finished rubberwood and acacia, left palpable under a hand rather than sealed smooth.

Designed in Australia and made in Vietnam under a Fair Trade scheme by Q Toys.

Age & safety

Safety

Tested to ASTM F963, the US toy safety standard. Recommended for ages 3 and up.

THIS MICROSCOPE DOES NOT MAGNIFY. There is no lens and no optics. It is an instrument for observation play, which is what makes a child stop and look closely. If you need real magnification, buy a magnifying glass alongside it.

Care & storage

Wipe with a dry cloth, or one barely damp. Do not soak. Re-oil occasionally if the wood looks dry.
