Tiny Terrains is a set of four hand-felted habitat mats: Desert, Waters, Grasses, and Snow. Each is sized to fit alongside the others on a single table; children move a figure between biomes as the story moves. The gnome who lives in the grasses walks into the desert, crosses the waters, and arrives in snow on the way home. The geography lesson hides inside the play.

Made from 100% pure New Zealand wool by skilled artisans in Nepal, each mat is hand-felted and beautifully unique. Thick, soft, and strong.

From age three through the early school years. Open-ended small-world play across the Pre-K to Grade 2 window.

Why it lasts.

We carry Tiny Terrains because the four-biome configuration is genuinely useful: all four mats on one table, a figure that can move between them, and a habitat or geography unit that runs itself. It is 100% New Zealand wool, hand-felted, and sized to work with the small-world figures that pair with the full G+M playmat line.

Ways to play

Swap terrains to reset the scene or combine them for a larger world; story play and small-world arranging on the floor or a play tray. Sits in the Gus + Mabel Busy Bee Tray, a sensory tray sold separately in three insert layouts: <a href="/products/busy-bee-tray-tray-2-half-inserts-and-lid-set">2 half inserts</a>, <a href="/products/busy-bee-tray-4-quarter-inserts-and-lid-set">4 quarter inserts</a>, or <a href="/products/busy-bee-tray-6-sixth-inserts-and-lid-set">6 sixth inserts</a>.

Skills it builds

Fine motor control, focus, spatial reasoning, and language through storytelling.
Care & storage
Wool is naturally self-cleaning, so most days a spot clean and fresh air is enough. For a deeper refresh, soak ten minutes in lukewarm water with a little wool wash or baby shampoo, rinse cool, press flat in a towel, and dry flat in the shade away from direct sun. Keep water temperatures consistent (lukewarm wash → cool rinse) so you don't shock the wool into shrinking.
