Half a coconut shell with holes drilled through the bottom, on a wooden handle. Fill it with dry sand and lift, and it comes out in a dozen thin falling lines.

It is a sieve, a watering can and a rain machine, depending on what is in the tray that day.

From two, at the sand table, with an adult nearby and sleeves rolled up.

Why it lasts.

We carry Q Toys at My Toy Wagon because they finish wood to be felt rather than sealed smooth, and because they make under a Fair Trade scheme in Vietnam with a zero-waste principle behind the material choices.

Who it's for

For the parent
Under thirty dollars, and it does the one thing a plastic scoop cannot. The falling lines are the whole show.
For the educator
Cause and effect at the sand table, and a pouring and filling tool that holds attention longer than a cup.
For the gift-giver
A small natural gift that is not another wooden animal, and it works indoors and out.

Ways to play.

Fill it with dry sand and watch it fall in lines.

Hold it under running water and make rain.

Use it with rice, lentils or dry pasta indoors when the sand table is put away.

Race two of them and see which empties first.
