Ten pieces and the dish to serve them in. Three lettuce leaves, three tomato slices, three cucumber slices, and a white felt dish 5.5 in across with a raised rim that keeps everything from sliding off.

Three of each is a deliberate number. It is enough to sort by kind, count out evenly between two people, or build three identical plates. Each tomato is a thick ring with a pale pink core and gold seeds stitched around it.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. Nine loose pieces suit a child past the stage of putting things in their mouth.

Why it lasts.

Hand felted in Nepal from premium New Zealand merino, colored with non-toxic dyes. The dish is wet felted into a form that holds its shape under the food, and the tomatoes and cucumbers are built up and embroidered one at a time. Because the dish comes with it, a child builds a plate and hands it over rather than hunting for something to put it on first.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want a set that arrives complete, with a dish wet felted to hold its shape under the food and vegetables built up and stitched one at a time.
For the educator
It supports vegetable vocabulary and sorting as well as dramatic play, and nine loose pieces means more than one child can build a plate at the same time.
For the gift-giver
It arrives in a branded Playtisserie tote with ten pieces inside, and the plate makes it look like a complete gift rather than an accessory.

Ways to play.

Because the plate comes with it, the set arrives ready to serve rather than needing something else first. A child builds a plate, hands it over, and takes it back to build a different one.

Three of each vegetable is a deliberate number. It is enough to sort by kind, count out evenly between two people, or make three identical plates, so the set does arithmetic work as well as pretend work. It also pairs with the sandwich set, since the two share the same vegetables.

Details

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form, which is how the plate takes its shape and holds it. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted with a barbed needle, which is how the tomatoes and cucumbers are built up before the detail is stitched in. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and lay flat to dry. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store the nine loose pieces stacked inside the plate so the thin slices stay flat rather than curling at the edge, and count them back in. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
