Ships late September.. We will email you the moment it ships.

A square bar built in layers the way a real one is. Pale yellow sponge, a thick band of white icing over it, and a half slice of lemon with a green leaf beside it.

The segments are stitched in fine white thread fanning out from the rind, which is hand embroidery on a piece this small. It sits flat and square, so it stacks on a plate with other slices and gets carried to somebody rather than rolling about.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. A single piece for a child setting a table or running a bakery.

Why it lasts.

Premium New Zealand merino wool and non-toxic dyes, wet felted into a solid form and then needle felted to shape the lemon and the leaf. Nothing is glued on. A single slice works harder than a whole cake does, because it has to be given to someone, and it gets served, offered, and saved for later.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want hand embroidery on a piece this small, with the lemon segments stitched in fine thread over a felted ground.
For the educator
It works on a bakery counter or a tea party tray, and the visible layers give children something concrete to describe before they invent a scenario.
For the gift-giver
It arrives with a Playtisserie swing tag and is small enough to tuck alongside a larger present without competing with it.

Ways to play.

A single slice works harder than a whole cake does, because it has to be given to someone. It gets served, offered, saved for later and argued over, and it turns up in a tea party, a bakery or a birthday depending on what is happening that day.

It sits flat and square, so it stacks on a plate with other slices and stands on a shelf between play sessions rather than rolling into a bin.

Details

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form, which is how the sponge and the icing layers take their body. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted with a barbed needle, which is how the lemon and the leaf are worked on without glue. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry away from direct heat. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store it upright rather than pressed under heavier toys, so the icing layer keeps its edge and the lemon keeps its relief. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
