An Australian birthday party staple: white bread, buttered, covered in sprinkles and cut into triangles. This one is 4.3 in along the long edge, a thick cream slice with a golden crust worked around it.

Each sprinkle is a separate raised nub of felted wool, placed one at a time. You can feel them under a thumb, which is the first thing a child does with it.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. A single piece for a child setting a table or running a party.

Why it lasts.

Hand felted in Nepal from premium New Zealand merino wool and non-toxic dyes. Every sprinkle is worked into the wool rather than resting on a surface, so there is nothing to rub away. It belongs on a party table more than in a kitchen, and a child who has never heard of fairy bread understands it immediately, because it is bread with sprinkles on.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want real detail at this size, with every sprinkle placed one at a time and raised enough to feel under a thumb.
For the educator
It opens a conversation about how children in another country celebrate, and it works in a dramatic play kitchen or on a party table alongside anything else.
For the gift-giver
It arrives with a Playtisserie swing tag and is an obvious small gift for an Australian family abroad or for anyone who grew up on it.

Ways to play.

It belongs on a party table more than in a kitchen. Put it out with a felt cake and a tea set and the play becomes a birthday rather than a meal.

It also does the job a single slice does well. It goes on a plate, into a lunchbox, or into a picnic a child is assembling from whatever is on the shelf, and because it is one piece nothing has to be kept together with it.

Details

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid sheet. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, which is how details this small are attached without glue or stitching. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and lay flat to dry. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store it flat rather than under heavier toys, so the triangle keeps its shape and the sprinkles keep their relief. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
