Pre-order open

Ships late September.. We will email you the moment it ships.

Built in four parts, 3.1 in tall. A mustard fluted case with the ridges felted in, a domed cake above it in the icing color, a swirl of white cream over that, and a red cherry on top.

Choose pink, blue or purple icing. A cupcake gets given rather than eaten, and choosing which color is usually where the play starts. Sprinkles run across both the icing and the cream, worked in as fine pastel lines.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. The cherry is a small part, so this suits a child past the mouthing stage.

Icing

Why it lasts.

Four separate elements, each shaped by hand in Nepal from premium New Zealand merino wool and non-toxic dyes, with nothing glued together. Even the ridges on the case are worked into the wool. It stands on its own base, so it works on a bakery counter or a shelf rather than lying in a bin.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want four separate elements shaped and joined without glue, down to the ridges worked into the fluted case.
For the educator
It works on a bakery counter or a tea party tray, and three icing colors give children something to choose between, count out and share.
For the gift-giver
It arrives with a Playtisserie swing tag and is the right size for a stocking, a party bag or the small thing tucked alongside a bigger present.

Ways to play.

A cupcake gets given rather than eaten. It goes on a plate, gets offered to somebody, comes back, and goes out again, and the choosing of which color is usually where the play starts.

It stands on its own base, so it works on a bakery counter or a shelf between play sessions rather than lying in a bin. It pairs naturally with the lemon sponge, since the two make a bakery rather than a single cake.

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form, which is how the sponge base and the icing take their body. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted with a barbed needle, which is how the sprinkles and the cherry are worked on without glue. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry standing up. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store it upright rather than pressed under heavier toys, so the icing swirl keeps its shape and the sprinkles keep their relief. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
