A felted forest and river mat, 15.7 by 11.8 in, with a teal river running through green banks and white ripples worked into the current. The shrubs are felted into the mat itself. Everything else lifts off.

Where the tent goes and which side of the river the trees stand on gets decided before any story starts, and decided differently the next time. The tent is blanket-stitched and lined in orange so a small figure fits inside, and it all packs into two drawstring bags.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. The nine rocks are small parts, so this suits a child well past the mouthing stage.

Why it lasts.

The mat is wet felted from premium New Zealand merino and the pieces are needle felted, all of it by hand in Nepal with non-toxic dyes. A felted mat has weight and body, so it lies flat on a floor instead of creasing, and the trees stand up on their own without a base. Nineteen loose pieces means several children can build on it at once without waiting for a turn.

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid sheet, which is how the mat itself is made. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, which is how the trees, tent and rocks take their shape. Everything is stitched and finished by hand.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and lay flat to dry. Never machine wash wool felt, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it, and a felted mat will not recover its shape. Roll the mat rather than folding it, so it does not take a crease. Keep the eighteen loose pieces in the two drawstring bags and count the rocks back in, since those are the ones that get lost. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
