Ships by the end of September. We will email you the moment it ships.

A tree with a face cut into its trunk, eyes narrowed and a grin full of teeth, two long branches curling out on either side like arms. The top is washed green and the rest left pale, so it reads as something that grew this way rather than something that was painted.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The eyes and teeth are cut into the wood rather than drawn on, and the curling branches are carved from the same block as the trunk, so nothing can snap off.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a child who is past the friendly end of Halloween and wants something with teeth in it.
For the educator
This is the properly menacing piece in the range, so it belongs on a shelf for older children rather than in a room where some are still uneasy about Halloween.
For the gift-giver
It makes the gift for the child who complains that everything is too cute, and the face is the reason they will pick it up first.

Ways to play.

With a face and arms it behaves as a character rather than scenery, which is what separates it from an ordinary tree. Stand it beside the witch house and it guards the path. Children usually decide whether it is friendly before anything else happens.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

On this piece the face and the curling branches are cut from the same block as the trunk, and it stands on a carved root base without a separate stand.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
