Two pale pink stalks curving away from each other out of a small base, the shape water makes when it moves something slowly. Nothing else in the range is this simple, and that is what makes it read as underwater.

Why it lasts.

Both stalks and the base are cut from a single block, which matters on a piece this slender, since a glued stalk on a toy this size would not last a week.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that wants an ocean shelf to have something growing on it rather than only creatures.
For the educator
It belongs in a reef basket, and its curving stalks make an easy prompt for talking about how currents move things underwater.
For the gift-giver
It makes a small gift for a child already building a reef, and it fills the gap between the corals and the fish.

Ways to play.

Stand it on a blue play cloth among the corals and the seabed stops being flat. It is the piece that suggests movement in a scene where nothing actually moves, and children tend to place it last.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Despite the subject, this is not a bath toy. Keep it out of water entirely. Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp, and never soak or submerge it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and store it indoors somewhere dry. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
