A mallard drake with a green head, a yellow bill, and a chestnut wing brushed across pale gray. It is the duck from the park pond rather than a cartoon one, which is what makes it worth having.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The green head is worked into the grain rather than laid over it, so the wood still shows through.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that feeds the ducks and wants one on the shelf at home.
For the educator
It belongs on a pond shelf, and its accurate mallard markings make it usable for real identification rather than only for play.
For the gift-giver
It makes a good gift after a summer of feeding the ducks, and the geese and goslings extend it into a whole pond.

Ways to play.

Set it on a blue play cloth with the goose and the gosling and the pond builds itself. It also travels well: children take it to the actual duck pond and spend the visit matching what they are holding to what they are watching.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Despite the subject, this is not a bath toy. Keep it out of water entirely. Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp, and never soak or submerge it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and store it indoors somewhere dry. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
