A full moon rising over a burnt orange sky, with bats crossing it and bare trees cut into the edges. It stands on its own base behind everything else, and it is the piece that turns a group of objects into a night.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The bats and branches are cut clean through the panel rather than painted on, so the light comes through them.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that already has a few Halloween pieces and wants the one thing that pulls them together.
For the educator
It gives a seasonal shelf a backdrop, which is what lets children treat the arrangement as a place rather than a row of objects.
For the gift-giver
It makes a good gift for someone who already owns the witch house, since it is the piece they will not have thought to buy.

Ways to play.

Stand it at the back and everything in front of it becomes a scene rather than a shelf. It works behind the witch house, and it works just as well behind a handful of pumpkins on a windowsill. Set a candle or a lamp behind it and the cutouts throw shadows.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

Most of the range is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. The background panel is the exception. It is plywood, because a sheet this wide and this thin stays flat as plywood and would cup and split in solid wood. That is a construction decision rather than a saving.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
