Ships by the end of September. We will email you the moment it ships.

A gray stone ledge carved in layers, with turquoise coral cups growing out of it at three different heights. It reads as a piece of reef rather than a single creature, which is why it holds a whole ocean scene together.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The stone is faceted rather than smoothed, and the gray is worked in layers so the rock reads as rock and not as painted wood.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family building an ocean shelf that needs one structural piece rather than more creatures.
For the educator
It anchors a reef small-world setup, and its ledges and overhang give children a way to talk about coral as a place animals live rather than a rock.
For the gift-giver
It makes a substantial gift for a child who already has some sea creatures and needs somewhere to put them.

Ways to play.

The overhang gives the fish somewhere to swim under and the ledges give the crab somewhere to climb. It is the piece that turns a handful of sea creatures into a reef, and it does the same job underwater that a tree does on land.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
