A house grown into a flowering tree, arriving on its own carved base with the stone path already laid and the toadstools already in the garden. Most pieces need a scene built around them. This one brings the scene with it.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. This is the largest and most detailed piece Mako makes, and the carving in the canopy and the path is where that shows.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family buying one significant piece rather than several small ones.
For the educator
It anchors a storytelling corner on its own, and the built-in base means it can be set out and put away without rebuilding the scene each time.
For the gift-giver
It makes a milestone gift, the kind given for a big birthday and remembered years later.

Ways to play.

The base gives the small animals a garden to arrive in and a path to walk up. It works as the centerpiece a whole shelf is arranged around, and it reads as a display piece on the days nobody is playing.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

This is the largest and most detailed piece Mako makes. It arrives on its own carved base, and unlike the smaller houses in the range its front door is carved in place rather than lifting out.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
