Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The legs are cut from the body rather than added on, so none of them can snap off.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that comes back from the beach wanting to keep some of it.
For the educator
It belongs in a rock pool or shoreline basket, and its many legs and stalked eyes make it a good prompt for talking about how differently sea creatures are built.
For the gift-giver
It makes a good gift after a beach holiday, and it is the piece most likely to get a laugh out of the box.

Ways to play.

Perch it on the coral ledge or the edge of the shell house and it looks about to scuttle off. It belongs on the sand rather than in the water, which is what gives an ocean scene a shoreline instead of just a seabed.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Despite the subject, this is not a bath toy. Keep it out of water entirely. Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp, and never soak or submerge it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and store it indoors somewhere dry. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
