Why it lasts.

The bars are painted rather than printed, so they wear with the wood instead of peeling off it. The fins are cut as part of the body rather than added on, so none of them can snap off.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family building an ocean collection beyond the fish everyone already knows.
For the educator
It belongs in a reef basket, and its bold stripes are a good starting point for talking about how markings work as camouflage.
For the gift-giver
It makes a small gift for a child already building a reef, and it is the brightest of the three fish.

Ways to play.

Balance it against the coral ledge with the clownfish and the discus fish and the reef has three fish that look nothing alike. Lining up the three is the sorting game children reach for first.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Despite the subject, this is not a bath toy. Keep it out of water entirely. Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp, and never soak or submerge it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and store it indoors somewhere dry. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
