A barn front with a pitched white roofline and wide doors that slide open and shut. It is shallow from front to back because it is scenery. Stand it at the back of a play mat and the farm suddenly has a horizon.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The doors run in a track rather than on hinges, so there is no hardware to loosen.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that already has farm animals and wants one large piece to build the scene around.
For the educator
It anchors a farm small-world setup, and the working doors give younger children a repeatable action that supports sequencing and routine play.
For the gift-giver
It makes a substantial single gift, and it turns a handful of animals a child already owns into a whole farm.

Ways to play.

Stand it at the back of a play mat and run the fences out from either side. Open the doors in the morning and close them at night, which becomes a routine children keep to strictly. The animals go in and out through the doorway rather than over the top.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
