A sprawling ocean world in soft, hand-felted wool, sized to cover a full tabletop or spread out on the floor. A blue sea crested with white waves runs up to a sandy shore, where seaweed-draped rocks shelter a scatter of tide pools and a small cave. Every wave, pebble, and strand of seaweed is its own raised felt piece, made by hand and built to be handled.

Sea creatures slip in and out of the cave and gather along the shore, and it holds a whole afternoon of play. The animals are yours to bring, and the figures shown here are not included. When the tide goes out, it rolls up and fastens with a single button.

We brought in the Sea and Rockpool Mat because small world play near the coast hits differently than any other scene. Children who live near the sea recognise it immediately; children who have never seen a tidepool are drawn in just as fast. The natural landscape gives imagination a framework without prescribing the story, so play goes longer and goes deeper. That is the standard we hold our play mats to.

Materials & construction

Each piece is crafted from 100% New Zealand wool felt, sourced from GOTS-certified farms. The wool is colored with azo-free, non-toxic dyes and verified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Every component, including structural threads and dyes, is cleared of over 100 harmful substances. The finished pieces contain no plastic, no batteries, and no synthetic fill.

These pieces are made in Kathmandu, Nepal, by a cooperative of over 350 women artisans, the majority of whom are mothers. Each is shaped through traditional needle-felting and wet-felting, without molds or machines. The cooperative holds Fair Trade USA certification, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions. Your purchase directly supports the economic independence of the women who made it.

Ways to play

Place sea creatures in and around the rockpool and cave. Use the sandy shore for crabs and coastal birds, and the open water for fish, whales, and dolphins. Care & storage

Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not submerge or machine wash. Air dry flat. Roll loosely and fasten with the button to store upright or flat. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the wool's color.
