A small pumpkin with a winking face and a curled green stem, carved from pale maple so the grain shows through the orange. The wink is the whole thing, and it is the reason a two-year-old picks this one up first.

Why it lasts.

Maple, left untreated where the wood is bare and hand-painted where it is colored. The face is painted onto raw wood rather than onto a finished surface, which is why the grain runs through it.

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Keep it out of standing water and away from direct heat.
