A built woodland ecosystem scene: hand-painted Bumbu animals arranged across terrain and trees on a classroom table, with the Acorn House at its center.

Woodland Life-Science Lab.

Hand-painted animals with real heft and grain, felt trees that turn from spring green to pale white-sage, hand magnifiers to look closer. A living-science lab for Pre-K to Grade 3, where children build the terrain, populate the food web, and study what lives there.

Ages 3+ · Pre-K to Grade 3 NGSS K-2 · life science Water-based paints & organic oils Hand-felted wool Made in Romania, Nepal, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and the USA

Bumbu in Romania, Tara in Nepal. Made to order, on purpose.

Bumbu cuts every animal and tree from maple or linden, also called lime, one wood or two depending on the piece, then paints each by hand with German water-based paints, produced to EN 71 standards, and finishes it with organic oils. The Papoose Seasonal Trees are hand-felted in Nepal on liana-wood trunks, no two alike. Neither workshop keeps stock. Both build to order.

Children set up a small-world scene with Bumbu birch trees and orange fox figures on a classroom table.
What the Life-Science Lab Is

A real forest, made small. A place to look closer.

It is built from named species. The fox family is two adults, one sitting and one at a run, with two kits, one sitting and one nose-up and curious. Behind them stand a pair of birches and the rock forms that mark the terrain. Children sort by canopy and species, map animals to habitats, and track the seasons across the Papoose Seasonal Trees, then reach for a magnifier to look closer. No batteries. No instructions. The forest is the instructions.

The Deer Family.

Hand-painted hardwood. Five pieces. A full morning of stories.

The stag keeps watch from the ridge while the doe and her fawns graze in the clearing below. One fawn lies curled and sleeping, another nibbles nearby, and a third stands alert at the edge. The figures stand free; the relationships do the rest.

A note on Tiny Folk

The woodland is the forest itself. The people who live in it have their own volume.

Children always ask, who lives here? Wonderheart Little Folk, rainbow and pastel gnomes, flower children, fairy doors, and wishing wells, live a volume away in Section 05, Imaginative Worlds. They move into the Bumbu woodland naturally: a fox family at the edge of the clearing, a gnome family at the doorstep of the felted toadstool. One small world.
